Twice As Good or Four Times As Hard?

One of my all time favorite quotes is this:

“Whatever women must do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.”
~ Charlotte Whitton

How true this statement has been in my lifetime. There is some interesting math involved here, though, depending on how you interpret the quote. If we have to work twice as hard to get half the credit, wouldn’t we have to work four times as hard in order to be equal? No wonder we women are so exhausted all the time!

Now on to the part that says “Luckily, this is not difficult.” I am not so sure that is true. Any time a woman takes on the challenge of a “man’s job,” there is usually an instant barrier set in place that she must somehow get over. I have honestly never yet met a woman who walked into a particular job or field of expertise and was just accepted and never once felt an ounce of discrimination. If you have ever experienced total acceptance, please share your story.

So what do we do about this? It seems that every time we make some progress, something happens and we slide backward a few notches. Take the field of technology for instance. Women were making great strides in this area just a couple of years ago. Today, the number of women pursuing careers in the computer sciences is on a serious decline. Why? Are there less females interested in technology now or are they just tired of working four times as hard to get the same results as the males?

What is your profession? Do you feel like you are working four times as hard?

they never say it straight to your face, it comes with jokes while they are very serious and convinced about it,, in a man’s wiring, a woman cannot beat him in problem solving, how come you challenge him in his field of expertise? God Forbid!

in their heads when they take account of the chances of a woman leveling with them in same task/work, they immediately take it for granted especially in fields of science and technology.

I just believe there is Certain jobs for Men..Women cant succeed at it.

I’m a radiographer… and I LOVE it because its kind of the other way around lol. Theres one guy in our department and we torment the hell out of him. Dont worry ladies, i got your back covered and taking revenge for you everyday of my life…. in VERY creative ways 😀
On the contrary side, Im studying to be a chiropractor which is more of a man’s world… i’ll let you know about that when I get there, yikes!
I think it needs a lot of confidence, knowledge, and strive to be better, to step into the plate and show them whose boss 😉
I think with “Luckily, this is not difficult.” Charlotte means, men might be putting challenges but women are able to achieve and accomplish easier then men thought it would be for women, go us!! lol

  7. Maioush says:

    LOL! Yeah sure!! 😀

Yeah maybe, but in general I think that is not the case.

Exactly!! And I started to feel it more since I started this job, I mean it’s really hard considering the way they deal with it!

There is no such a thing, you can do anything you want if you work hard for it! Womern can things just like men, but again, we have to do the math!

Bravo 3aleaki, and I’m sure you’ll be great at it, I always wished for a female chiropractor, 5alas wait for me, when my shoulder starts to hurt again, you’ll be the first one to call 😀

Thank you so much, I’m honored to hear these words from you! Really!
